The O.B Lulu-Briggs Foundation started its programmes with Care For Life, an intervention aimed exclusively at extending love, physical, spiritual and medical care to senior citizens, living mostly in rural communities.
Our experience with the elderly people showed that because many of them had literally been left ignored in back rooms, they were not integrated into regular community and even social lives and so they were largely bitter, sad and practically waiting for death.
In direct response to this realization and based on the great value we place on our silver haired citizens, a little over 5 years ago, the O.B Lulu-Briggs Foundation embarked on what appeared to be a very tall order for many who did not share our vision. We built the Biokpo Recreational Centre for the Elderly in Abonnema, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Today, every day of the week, this ultra modern 2 storey building plays host of about 50 elderly men and women. They are transported to the centre, given a nutritional meal; they can play games, chat with friends and take a nap if they wish to.
The change this Recreational Centre has brought to the lives of our senior citizens is amazing. Now they feel integrated into happenings in the communities. They can catch up with friends they had long lost hope of seeing again. And for many of them, the bitterness, sadness and sense of abandonment is gone.
